Close to the Shore

This piece was commissed by a family in celebration of their Father's life at sea. Paddy and his brother first began their journey at sea in 1974, collecting their boat that was originally built in Sean Craig's Boatyard in Inver, Co Donegal.

Over the years the brothers worked side by side leaving the shore with the wind and the sea sometimes their friend, sometimes their foe. Longlines in winter, Salmon and close to the shore...lobster. When the sea had no harvest they travelled to Scotland. Both brothers rested aged 70 and 78 years, along with their boat.

This "Treasure" is made from the remains of the oak keel of the boat after it had been abandoned on the shore for a number of years and even suffered fire damage.

The oak in this weathered state combined with handcrafted silver produced a truly emotive piece of treasure for the family.

A new life was injected into something that was once destined to become a lost piece of history for the family.
